DRY RIESLINGS FROM CLASSIFIED GRAND CRU SITES OF THE MOSEL.

VDP.GROSSE LAGE® is a designation given to the highest quality German vineyards. The best wines grow in these sites, developing complex flavors, expressive terroir character and enhanced ripening potential. The sites are determined by the VDP regional associations and delineated with parcel precision. The grapes are selectively harvested by hand and are limited to a maximum yield of 50 hl per hectare.

We produce nine Grosses Gewächse (GGs) from VDP.Grosse Lage® vineyards in our winery. These are dry Rieslings, hand-picked and hand-selected, spontaneously fermented in used oak barrels, and aged on the full lees for at least one year. Only then are the wines released. Thus, the wines, in addition to a fascinating aroma, also develop amazing structure and natural harmony for long aging.

**In the Mosel wine region, the VDP. Regional Association waives the classification level VDP.ERSTE LAGE.

Bernkasteler Lay Riesling GG

The shallow slate soil of the Lay produces powerful and complex dry wines. Classic fruit aromas, strongly reminiscent of apple and white peach, combine with floral, herbal and sometimes earthy aromas to create a very fascinating kaleidoscope of flavors.

The dry wine from a VDP.GROSSE LAGE® vineyard is the VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS® (GG). The best wines, with complex taste, expressive site character and special ripening potential mature in the Grosse Lagen. The grapes are harvested and selected by hand. Only healthy grapes from the best plots are fermented spontaneously in neutral oak barrels (1,000 to 3,000 liters) and matured for at least 12 months on the full lees.

Graacher Himmelreich Riesling GG Alte Reben

This site has often proven its potential for great wines with residual sweetness as well as fine off-dry wines, but it has always been somewhat overshadowed by the neighboring Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Unjustly, in our opinion. Since the 2011 vintage, we have been producing this great dry wine from a parcel of very old vines (“Alte Reben”). It combines wonderful vineyard peach and herbal notes with deep minerality, in addition to plenty of power and elegance - truly heavenly.

Graacher Domprobst Riesling GG

Facing south-southwest, very steep and well protected from wind and frost by the topography, the Domprobst is the centerpiece among the Graacher sites. The wines are rich in extract and structured, characterized by Devonian slate soils with herbaceous-earthy tones, as we already know from the surrounding Graacher Himmelreich.

Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling GG Alte Reben

The ungrafted vines from which we produce this great Riesling are up to 120 years old. They reside in a plot called “Urglück,” a steep site that rises steeply directly behind the village in the heart of the Würzgarten. The vines grow in red volcanic and slate soil that gives the wine aromas of spice along with tropical fruits, such as pineapple and mango. The must is fermented spontaneously in a 1,000-liter barrel and sits on the full lees for twelve months.

Erdener Treppchen Riesling GG Alte Reben

This wine is harvested from our oldest parcels of Erdener Treppchen, where steady winds keep the clusters dry and prevent the onset of harmful molds. This allows for an exceptionally long hang time, giving the grapes extraordinary aromatic development. The wine is fermented spontaneously in a 1,000-liter barrel and sits on the full lees for twelve months.

Erdener Prälat Riesling GG

This powerful and complex dry Riesling comes from perhaps the best Grand Cru site in the Mosel. The Prälat forms a perfectly south-facing vineyard site between the Moselle and the dramatically shaped, heat-retaining slate formations above. Our top dry wine comes from parcels with very old vines growing on mineral-rich red slate. For the Grosse Gewächs, we harvest very ripe and completely healthy grapes. The must is fermented spontaneously in Fuder barrels and lies on the full lees for twelve months. This gives the wine a great structure and natural harmony for a long life, in addition to its fascinating aromas reminiscent of mango, apricot and bitter almond.
