Recap and Photos of Ernst Loosen at Riesling Downunder

Ernst Loosen at Riesling Downunder 2018
Dr. Loosen winemaker Ernst Loosen shares his knowledge at the Riesling Downunder “Site and Style” masterclass.

We think pretty much everyone who attends Riesling Downunder agrees with Erni Loosen that it’s one of the world’s best – and most fun – Riesling events.

Downunder 2018 in early February was no exception and Erni was there in fine form.  From informal tastings like the Riesling Riot to the more formal tastings and masterclasses, he shared his extensive knowledge and love for the noble grape.

At the two Riesling Riots in Melbourne and Sydney he was on hand while tasters enjoyed a selection of Dr. Loosen wines:

At the “Tradition, Trials & Today’s Table” masterclass, he presented a Dr. Loosen collaboration with Clare Valley’s Jim Barry Estate: 2016 Foudre Ferment – Lodge Hill Block Select Riesling.

And at the “Site and Style” masterclass, he presented the 2016 Dr. Loosen GG (dry, grand cru), Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese Rieslings from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr (“Sundial of Wehlen”) vineyard. The idea of this class was to explore how a vineyard site expresses itself across various styles of Riesling, and what the producer has to do to respect and bring out the various unique properties of the site.

Erni also appeared on a Q&A panel called “Relevance of Riesling” to talk about Riesling’s potential on the global marketplace and what producers can do to realize that potential. The 2016 Dr. L Riesling Dry was poured to prompt discussion.

Morgan Dunn Recommends Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling GG

A few days after “Downunder,” wine expert Morgan Dunn wrote “Thirsty for an Excellent Riesling” in The Australian. Here’s our favorite quote from his column:

“If you’re not on the German wine bandwagon yet, you’re missing out. Wine of the day? A tough call but for the complexity of aroma, detail in texture and fine lines of acid, I’d have to pick the Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Grosses Gewachs 2016. This is Mosel wine at its very best. No wonder everyone wants [Erni Loosen’s] picture.”
